A smart and curious voter reached out to me this AM. So I figured I’d respond.
Here’s what he said:
I have seen your videos, instagram and did some AI research on you. What I have garnered is you appear (to me) to protect yourself from “issue scrutiny”. Independent/populist, libertarian, anti-establishment (easy). I have Mad Respect for your “I’m going first” mantra as I am writing this really doing nothing more. Props to you!
I am a 60 year old conservative Tustin/Irvine resident all my life. College Educated (CSUF) and married for 22 years (two college aged kids).
Tell me where you stand on Guns, LGB and TQ (separately), immigration, crime & policing, abortion, taxes and Israel.
I am looking at my ballot right now
Think I’ve answered most of these but I’m happy to do it again.
Remember MOST IMPORTANTLY I am here to represent the people in District 47. What THEY want I will do– even if it is contrary to my own views on things. So keep that in mind.
- Guns– not a gun guy, don’t own one. But I am a freedom guy. I support as many rights as possible– including the second amendment. The less the government can take from you the better in my view. So your gun rights are safe with me.
- LGB– all good with me. Live and let live. Truthfully I love gay folks. Lots of fun.
- TQ– not sure what the Q stands for. Trans people are fine with me. Don’t think they deserve any special rights but they don’t deserve to be treated any different either. I am against trans people competing in college sports though. Sorry if I offend anyone but I am deeply into the traditions of college sports–I’m a purist in a lot of ways (don’t even like the automatic strikezone in baseball.)
- Immigration– I am on record here. We need a deal to get criminal illegals off our streets NOW but we also want militarized ICE agents wearing masks off our streets NOW as well. No sanctuary cities. No federal agents with m-16s patrolling our streets. Both are NUTS. This is America. We can easily accomplish both of these goals.
- Crime/policing– I am very tough on crime (you’d be surprised just how tough). I hate crime. Really I hate disrespect for the LAW. You will never find someone more willing to prosecute people– ANYONE– for a knowing legal violation. That includes the rich and powerful (make an example out of them!) That said, the person must truly be guilty before they are punished and we need to make sure our legal and justice system are fair and impartial. I love the police and first responders (my brother is a Fire Captain at OCFA!) so you know I have their back ALWAYS.
- Abortion– My wife is pregnant with our baby daughter right now and I am SO SO SO in love with her. I cannot imagine anyone wanting to hurt that baby or take that life. Absolutely breaks my heart. Truthfully makes me ill to think about it. Like, really ill. BUT, the truth is I love her enough to want to make sure she can make her own decisions in life and NOT be subject to needless government control over her choices. So I’d support a woman’s right to choose subject only reasonable restrictions on abortion– NO LATE TERM ABORTIONS FOR SURE– but early abortions I think are an acceptable and would have my support.
- Taxes–forget about it. You’ll never see anyone more anti-tax than me. BUT I also hate our national debt. So my plan would be to stop all the CRAZY partisan spending to get the debt under control and then cut taxes as our debt falls. We pay plenty of taxes to cover everything we NEED to be doing– but we keep doing dumb wars and dumb entitlements that lead to an endless tax burden. We can solve this. Trust me.
- Israel– We’ve been in a “special relationship” with them for a while now and it is time to get married. I know I’m way out of the mainstream here but I think they should become out 51st state. We spend so much money on Israel we ought to be getting something out of it. Love those guys, obviously. But we’re also killing ourselves for them right now. I think they should consider becoming our 51st state so we can see some return on the investment and they can live in peace and harmony forever with us. Plus more Christians can visit/live in the promised land that way too. I have been talking about this for some time and really nobody has given me any reasons why its a bad idea. It just seems like a win-win no brainer to me. But maybe I am missing something.
Hope this helps.
Now go fill in that ballot for Troutman.
