Bad Bunny

I had never heard of Bad Bunny until about 60 days. Now he’s everywhere.

Feels like when Charlie Kirk got shot. Some dude I’d never heard of suddenly became the most important person in the world. Or so it seemed.

But let’s talk about the that Bad Bunny halftime show real quick.

I know you’ve heard a bunch about it, but here’s my take.

  1. Most Americans couldn’t understand or relate to the show. That doesn’t make it good or bad in any qualitative sense. It just makes it inaccessible to most of the American audience.
  2. You could still enjoy the show if you chose to– but most people had to affirmatively choose to enjoy it. We are not used to that. Entertainment is supposed to meet the audience where the audience is– and not vice versa. So people felt uneasy about it.
  3. Stated directly the show was not for the majority of Americans but that was by design. The folks who chose Bad Bunny didn’t care what the majority of Americans wanted or could easily consumer because they weren’t targeting them. Many Americans were offended by that. They shouldn’t be.
  4. The halftime show doesn’t belong to America. It belongs to the NFL– and they’re trying to make money, and this is how they will grow their market share worldwide. The NFL has already completely saturated the American market. It is not going to grow its viewership by appeasing American viewers who aren’t going anywhere anyway. It will grow its market by bringing in eyes from high-growth regions– in this case Latin America.
  5. Wouldn’t shock me at all if we soon have a Chinese or Indian performance at halftime soon. Again, this is all about money– not about reflecting American values, ideas, or culture.
  6. This is not something the president or any other politician should be whining about. This is just capitalism and the free market doing what it does. They should point that out– as I just did.
  7. I personally didn’t understand the show, but I didn’t hate it. It seemed fine and comparable to other halftime performances with music I don’t listen to. I understand none of these shows are designed to appeal to me– a middle-aged lawyer who is going to watch the game regardless.

So that’s that.

Be outraged if you’d like. But I think its kind of silly.

Fine with TP and Kid Rock creating their own halftime show.

Fine with anyone else doing the same.

But don’t fault the NFL for using their halftime show to try to bring in eyes from high-growth markets. That is just capitalism and that’s the most American thing of all.
